The New Duffle Bags Are Here!

OK, I feel like Steve Martin in The Jerk, getting all excited because the new phone book is here...but the new duffle bags are here!!!

They're freakin huge! Maybe I should keep my car after all.

I'm Not Lucky

Maybe I'm being a bit sensitive, but I've found it interesting to hear some of the reactions of people when I tell them that I'm moving to Maui and why. Most have been great, but I get a few people - while I'm sure in their minds they're being supportive, don't realize that they're really not.

From a few, their only reaction is that I'm "lucky" or even tonight I got called an "asshole". I understand what they mean, but their response ignores that I've been busting my ass for 12 years, taking jobs that suck or where I always have administrators getting rid of me because I'm not one of their teaching robots. Working overnights &/or 3 jobs. Putting myself in the public spotlight when it's really not in my nature (I know...some of you only know me from my public stuff...it's for the cause...I'd rather do mailings and send e-mails than talk to a reporter).

I'm not lucky. I earned this. And if there was anything closely related to an opportunity like this for me here I'd be eating Garbage Plates for the rest of my life.

Most people have been awesome and they've expressed how happy they are for me. I guess still doing overnights and not sleeping well has just kept me cranky.

Aloha.

I'm a Ramblin Guy

When I get to Maui, I have to do a few things for the new job. TB test, some driving thing because I'll be driving a school van with kids to whatever projects we're working on, get fingerprinted and get a background check. I've had all of this before, but the most "daunting" is the background check. Not that I have something to hide, but that it usually entails remembering all the places you've lived for the last 12 years.

Right.

So I started coming up with the list tonight at work. I actually started with when the family moved back to Rochester from that swinging town of Albion to the present. It's a bit long. Let's go down memory lane, shall we. I couldn't remember a lot of the house numbers so feel free to let me know if you remember them:

XXX St. Paul Street 7/81 - 7/82
1079 Harvard Street 7/82 - 7/87
XXX Birr Street 7/87 - 7/88
XXX Dartmouth Street 7/88 - 7/89
15 Edmonds Street 7/89 - 7/92
XXX Clay Avenue 7/92 - 7/94
13 S. Goodman Street 7/94 - 7/97
5 N. Goodman Street 7/97 - 3/02
311 Wacona Street 3/02 - 7/02
84 Park Avenue 7/02 - 7/04
54 Rowley Street 7/04 - 6/06
65 Berkeley Street 6/06 - 7/07

Looks like I'll be taking a little field trip to look up some house numbers.

And if any of you have kept the same address book the entire time...sorry.

UPDATE: On my "Dave's Old Apartments Tour", it would seem that if I live in a house it either becomes boarded up or looks like it should be. Looks like they'll be condemning Maui in 5 years or so.

So Good it's Scary

I don't believe in jinxes, but if there's such a thing this post may do it. I have to admit, it's pretty scary how easily this move has been so far. Since I've known I'm moving to Hawaii I've:

  • Sold my car to the dealer who I bought it from

  • Broke the lease on my apartment (which I had just re-signed)

  • Found someone to rent the apartment

  • Found a place to live 3 blocks from the school and about a mile from the shore Check this out!

  • Sold most of my "crap" at a garage sale

  • Already met a few cool people in Maui online

  • Found a credit union that's linked to the one I use in Rochester

  • Found a place to rent a biodiesel fuel car for my first week. I may even buy one from them. Check out Bio-Beetle

Not too shabby. It's gotten to the point now, that I've been able to start focusing on the actual job...oh that's right, I'm going there to work. And the more I think about it, the more excited I'm getting. I can't wait to get into that school.

Non-related Note: Congratulations to us! The Stuart Bedasso Show was just downloaded for it's 2000th time.

Garage Sale Culture

There's no way I'm taking all my stuff to Hawaii. It's just not worth it. Lucky for me, the neighborhood my parents live in had a neighborhood garage sale. So I carted my crap there and got rid of most of it.

If you're looking at this picture and say to yourself, "Hey! I gave Dave that and he's selling it at a garage sale!" Don't be offended. I pretty much am getting rid of everything I own. I'm taking clothes, (too many) CD's, computer/podcast stuff, a handful of DVD's & books...oh yeah, my baseball gear. That's it. Stereo, TV, bed, couch, tables, chairs, gone. So yes, I sold that vase you gave me (to be honest, I didn't even know it was a vase until the lady who bought it told me so). I'm moving to freakin Hawaii - give me a break.

Garage Sale culture is a bit creepy. I'm sorry if you're one of those cats, but it was a weird two days. Having people look at your stuff, approvingly or disapprovingly...it was just odd. Fortunately, I had to work overnights both days so I was so exhausted I didn't care all that much. There are people who take this stuff seriously - as if they're looking for the Holy Grail. Maybe a 20-year-old toaster IS someone's Holy Grail. There were were some people who stood out:

*Crazy Blender Guy
*Asperger Syndrome Red Wing Guy
*Are-there-only-two-of-these Chick
*The Guy bought all my CD's in one swoop (over 200 of them)
*Look At My Heart Surgery Scar Guy

What's left in the apartment? A borrowed torture chamber...I mean futon, portable table to do the podcast, computer, packing materials, couple of lamps, a few plants, I have no dresser so there's clothes all over the bedroom floor. Nothing on the walls. Oh, I still have to eat for the next 3 weeks so the kitchen has stuff in it, but most of it is Goodwill-bound on July 16th.
